WIMS Ice Cream Social - August 15, 2024

The annual end-of-academic-year event for WIMS was held as an ice cream social in 2024. Dr. Carla Keirns, M.D., Ph.D, '23-24 WIMS President gave a State of WIMS address. The 2024 WIMS award recipients were also announced at the event!

"Snack & Chat & Mentor Mix-Up" - June 16, 2024

This event was a time of networking, socializing, and mentoring conversation. Discussion topics for the event included career paths, work/life integration, CV skills, grant applications, and financial planning. 


"Women & Entrepreneurship" - April 15, 2024  

Dr. Lisa Stehno-Bittel, PhD, is the former Chair of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science at KUMC. She is a successful entrepreneur and co-founder of the biotech company Likarda, and currently serves as the company's president.

She shared about her experience as a female entrepreneur, spoke to challenges of starting a business, and offered insights into launching her company.

"How to Succeed at Promotion"— March 5, 2024

Dr. Dianne Durham, PhD, Senior Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs and Development, discussed academic promotion, how to set yourself up for success throughout the process, and the KUMC School of Medicine specific promotion timeline.

"Lessons Learned: Career Development & Leadership"— September 19, 2022

Dr. Julie Wei, MD is an internationally recognized award-winning Pediatric Ear, Nose, and Throat Surgeon; speaker; author of A Healthier Wei; and co-author of Acid Reflux in Children

Dr. Wei spoke from her personal and professional experience on extreme burnout and the "scarcity" of life outside the practice of medicine. She used her perspective as an immigrant, female surgeon, academician, and parent to highlight and address system factors that are eroding physician wellbeing, career fulfillment, and longevity. "Gender Identity in Academia" Conversation — June 9, 2022

Dr. Xan Nowakowski, PhD shared personal experiences, answered questions, and offered insights on the nuances of how gender identity is approached in clinical settings versus academic settings more generally. 

Xan Nowakowski is an Assistant Professor in Geriatrics and Behaviora Sciences & Social Medicine at the Florida State University College of Medicine. They are a medical sociologist, public health program evaluator, and community advocate.

Dr. Dianne Durham, PhD, Senior Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs and Development shared insights on the SoM promotion process, how to enter your CV into FACT, and how to set yourself up for success throughout the entire process.

Picture a Scientist Film Screening and Panel Discussion — April 2, 2021

Picture a Scientist is a feature-length documentary film chronicling the groundswell of researchers who are writing a new chapter for women scientists. A biologist, a chemist and a geologist lead viewers on a journey deep into their own experiences in the sciences, overcoming brutal harassment, institutional discrimination and years of subtle slights to revolutionize the culture of science. From cramped laboratories to spectacular field stations, they also encounter scientific luminaries who provide new perspectives on how to make science itself more diverse, equitable and open to all. Burnout in Women Professionals presentation by Cynthia M. Stonnington, M.D. — November 20, 2020

Dr. Cynthia Stonnington is director of learner well-being for Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Sciences, Arizona campus, and vice chair of the Mayo Clinic Joy and Well-being Taskforce. She is the previous chair of Psychiatry and Psychology at Mayo Clinic in Arizona, where she remains an active staff member. She completed medical school at Mayo Medical School in Rochester, Minn., in 1986, her residency training in Psychiatry at Stanford University Medical Center in 1990 and a Clinical Research Fellowship in brain imaging at University College London's Wellcome Trust Centre for Neuroimaging in 2007.

An associate professor of psychiatry, one of her research and clinical interests is in identifying and testing interventions that can help individuals to increase their resiliency in the face of illness or risk for illness, and to develop strategies for health care institutions to develop the kind of supportive environment and culture that 21st century medical professionals need to thrive. She recently co-edited the book Burnout in Women Physicians: Prevention, Treatment, and Management, published by Springer in 2020, which was the inspiration for this grand rounds lecture. Lunch and Learn with KMBC 9 News Anchor Lara Moritz — February 19, 2020

Award-winning news anchor Lara Moritz, currently with KMBC 9 News, joined WIMS for a lunch and learn session. During her presentation, she spoke about her experiences in her professional life, burnout and alcoholism.
