Professional Background

Dr. William Gabrielli's career at Kansas University Medical Center goes back two generations.

In 1983, he entered KUMC as both a medical student and part-time assistant professor in the Department of Psychiatry and the Department of Pharmacology. A native Californian, Dr. Gabrielli received his undergraduate degree from California State University, Sacramento and his MA and Ph.D. in psychology from the University of Southern California. Before arriving at KUMC, he completed a postdoctoral training program at the University of Colorado's Institute for Behavioral Genetics and Department of Pharmacology. Following his graduation from the University of Kansas School of Medicine in 1987, Dr. Gabrielli completed his combined residency training program in internal medicine and psychiatry at KUMC.

Over the years at KUMC, Dr. Gabrielli served as Assistant Professor, then Associate Professor, and then Professor. In 1994, Dr. Gabrielli was appointed Vice Chairman for Clinical Affairs, Director of Education, Acting Director of Research. In 1995 he was promoted to Professor. For several years, Dr. Gabrielli also served as a courtesy faculty member of Psychology at the University of Kansas, Lawrence campus. Dr. Gabrielli served as the Acting Chair for the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Kansas Medical Center from 1996 until 1999, at which time, he was named the regular Chair of Psychiatry.

Throughout his career, Dr. Gabrielli has been a principal investigator and consultant for numerous research projects sponsored by governmental agencies and the pharmaceutical industry. This involvement along with his many years of experience in presenting at professional meetings and conferences has led to Dr. Gabrielli becoming an internationally recognized expert for his research on familial factors in addictions, alcoholism, psychiatric disorders. Several honors have been bestowed on Dr. Gabrielli including induction into the Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, the Psi Chi Honor Society in Psychology, the Gold Honor Society, Student Voice and Resident Choice Awards, several awards as Best Doctor, and a Service Achievement Award.

Dr. Gabrielli is a published author of numerous social science and medical publications and holds membership in local, state and national professional medical organizations. Dr. Gabrielli is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine, and the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (Psychiatry).

Overview

Dr. Gabrielli is a physician trained as a Psychiatrist and Internist. He also holds a PhD in Psychology and completed post-doctoral work in Behavioral Genetics. His research interests have included causes of criminality, causes of addictions, and translational psychopharmacology. His clinical interest is anxiety disorders in healthcare providers.
