Professional Background
Dr. Wissam El Atrouni is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Kansas Medical Center and serves as Director of Fellow Research for the Infectious Diseases Fellowship Program. He is also a member of the Non-tuberculous Mycobacterial Work group, Cystic Fibrosis Focus Group, the Fellowship Program Evaluation Committee, Diagnostic and Antimicrobial Stewardship Committees and is a Core Faculty for the Fellowship. Additionally, he serves as the Infectious Diseases Employee Health Clinic Consultant.
Dr. El Atrouni received his medical degree from American University of Beirut and completed his residency at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. He then moved to Rochester, Minnesota where he completed his Post-doctoral master’s degree in Biomedical Research, Clinical and Translational Research and Fellowship in Infectious Diseases at Mayo School for Graduate Medical Education.

Research
Overview
Dr. El Atrouni mentors many internal medicine residents and Infectious Diseases fellows through research studies, manuscript composition, poster and oral conference presentations and other scholarly efforts regionally as well as nationally. He lectures regionally on the topics of HIV therapeutics and PrEP and has presented his work related to HIV Internationally. His research areas of interest include HIV and antiretroviral resistance, Staphylococcus aureus bacteremia, non-tuberculous mycobacterial infections and complex bone, joint and device infections.
Dr. El Atrouni’s primary professional interests include mentorship in fellow research and in primary investigation of topics including novel COVID-19 infection therapeutics and treatment of staphylococcal infections and through his experience in this work instructs Infectious Diseases fellows on research methods and statistical analysis via formal didactics and Journal Club facilitation.
