Professional Background

Tobia Zanotto, Ph.D., is an assistant professor in the KU Department of Occupational Therapy Education. He joined the faculty at KU Medical Center in September 2022. In addition to his teaching role, he also provides mentorship to the students in the occupational therapy degree programs at KU Medical Center.

Active in current research efforts, Zanotto is examining the prevention of falls and fall-related injuries in people living with frailty and/or with chronic diseases. He is a leading member of the mobility core at the KU Center for Community Access, Rehabilitation Research, Education and Service.

Prior to his faculty appointment with KU, Zanotto worked as a postdoctoral fellow in the Mobility and Falls Lab at KU Medical Center, and before that at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, as part of a mentor-based fellowship funded by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Zanotto held graduate research positions at Queen Margaret University, Edinburgh, United Kingdom before relocating to the United States. During this time, he worked as a research assistant for a multicenter, exercise-based, randomized controlled trial (PEDAL) in the Clinical Research Facility at Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, Glasgow.

Academic Background

Zanotto earned a bachelor’s degree in human movement science in 2010, and a master’s degree in preventive and adapted physical activity in 2013 from the University of Padua, Italy. He then earned a doctorate in physiotherapy from Queen Margaret University in 2019.


Research

Overview

Research efforts by Zanotto focus on improving mobility and preventing adverse clinical outcomes, such as falls, in people living with frailty and/or with chronic diseases. His long-term research goals are to maximize quality of life and to minimize the burden of frailty in older adults and in people living with chronic diseases.
