Timothy Ryan R. Smith, M.D.

Professional Background

Dr. Smith is an associate professor in the department of pediatrics at the University of Kansas Medical Center. He serves as medical director of informatics for the department as well as founder and director of the Pillars Medical Complexity Clinic at the University of Kansas Health System.

Dr. Smith received his medical degree from the University of Kansas in 2010 and completed categorical residency in pediatrics at the University of Minnesota in 2013. He secured board certification in clinical informatics by the practice pathway in 2017.

Dr. Smith has a particular interest in collaborative learning and has served as assistant director of the Major Society in the School of Medicine since 2017 and a PBL facilitator since his arrival to the faculty in 2013. His teaching has been recognized by the student voice awards.


Research

Overview

Dr. Smith has research interests in the intersection of health care access and medical technology, access for primary care for children with special health care needs, and pediatric obesity. He has assisted with the Heartland Telehealth Center to grow remote health services across the state of Kansas.
Dr. Smith has served on the departmental research committee and has published on outcomes for pediatric obesity interventions, development screening in the EMR, and mechanisms of child food decisions.
