This Unit is designed to explore the correlation between Health and Social Determinants of Health, to motivate students to obtain financial stability, understanding that their financial decisions will greatly affect their health and their future family’s health.

Main Objectives

  • To learn the importance of being healthy
  • What are health disparities and its impacts on health
  • Access to banking and health disparities

Lesson 1: What Does it Mean to be Healthy?

This lesson will help students to understand the different factors that make up a healthy environment.

Students will learn:

  • What is Health?
  • What are the Social Determinants of Health?
  • How does this relate to the student?

Lesson 2: Unnatural Causes: Is Inequality Making us Sick?

This lesson will teach students about Health Disparities and how they affect people.

Students will:

  • Understand that Health Disparities exist and some of their causes
  • Be able to identify health disparities in their own lives

Lesson 3: Zip Code Research

This lesson will teach how to conduct research into different zip codes.

Students will:

  • Understand that different zip codes have different home values and different yearly incomes
  • Be able to identify social determinants of the different zip codes

Lesson 4: Finding the Social Determinants in the Selected Zip Codes

This lesson will be deepening the understanding from the previous lessons.

Students will:

  • Understand what social determinants are
  • Be able to locate and identify social determinants in their selected zip code
