Creating a Caring Community

Students will focus on emotional and social development in infancy by investigating attachment bonding in infancy. They will explore:

  • Learn about issues related to the isolation of mental health issues by doing research about this problem in the community.
  • Be able to create a safe space for other students who are experiencing depression, stress or anxiety that is directly affecting their lives.
  • Evaluate early by executing a survey in different languages to improve school culture to create a more inclusive school environment.
  • Conduct interviews to Hispanic students about their experience coming to USA in order to understand better the issues that they have been through with confidentiality, these conversations will be recorded and keep them with the teacher leading the project.
  • Research availability of mental health care resources to determine if the needs of our community are being met by being able to communicate in Spanish and other languages spoken by our diversity community at school.
  • Create a partnership between schools and community behavioral health professionals that offers students and families an extended network of services that are easily accessible. This results in better access to timely treatment and follow up care, in different languages English, Spanish, other languages spoken by our diversity community at school.
  • Create an app to upload contacts and information related to this community behavioral health professionals that can give support to our community in order to fulfill their needs.

Main Objectives

  • Students will be able to articulate an interview material on a self-chosen topic/issue they would like to know, organize their dialogue in a clearly and easy way to approach difficult questions towards the interviewer in Spanish.
  • Students will be able to organize the questions, record these answers and present them in a PowToon cartoon to make a presentation and keep reserve the interviewer’s history

Unit Overview


Lesson 1: “A Caring Community”

In this lesson, students will discuss about different communities in their school and in their community.

They will explore:

  • Students will be able to communicate with their peers about the issues in their community (knowledge)
  • Students will be able to communicate their report in different languages (skills)
  • Students will be able to determine when an event happens in different verb tenses
  • Students will be able to describe cultural perspectives in after-school activities
  • Students will be able to describe cultural perspectives in the diverse community in Wyandotte county

Lesson 2: “Recuerdos del Pasado-Memories from the Past”

In this lesson students will participate in class activities and come up with questions for interview they will conduct on classmates. Doing this will accomplish the unit goal of creating surveys in multiple languages that will improve school culture and school environment.

Students will be able to:

  1. Students will be able to complete a paragraph with new vocabulary and the imperfect tense.
  2. Students will be able to speak and write about social customs.
  3. Students will be able to speak about social occasions using the imperfect tense.
  4. Students will be able to learn about using the imperfect tense to describe a situation.
  5. Students will be able to describe relatives using the imperfect tense.
  6. Students will be able to speak using personal descriptions and vocabulary for family and leisure activities.
  7. Students will be able to ask and answer questions about activities in the past using the preterite.
  8. Students will be able to write and speak about childhood.
  9. Students will be able to choose preterite or imperfect tense and write the verb forms.

Lesson 3: “¿Cuántos años tenías? (how old were you?)”

In this lesson plan, students will be completing class activities as well as creating presentations of their recorded interviews. This lesson will continue to accomplish the unit goal of executing a school mental health survey in multiple languages to improve school culture and environment.

Students will

  1. Complete a paragraph with new vocabulary and the imperfect tense.
  2. Speak and write about social customs.
  3. Speak about social occasions using the imperfect tense.
  4. Use the imperfect tense to describe a situation.
  5. Describe relatives using the imperfect.
  6. Speak using personal descriptions and vocabulary for family and leisure activities.
  7. Ask and answer questions about activities in the past using the preterite.
  8. Write and speak about childhood.
  9. Choose preterite or imperfect tense and write the verb forms.

Lesson 4: “Application Hour”

In this lesson plan, students will participate in class activities. After, they will investigate how to create applications. This lesson will accomplish the unit goal of creating an app to upload contacts and information of mental health professionals in the community that can support the needs of the community.

Students will be able to:

  1. Listen to and write about a family occasion using the imperfect and preterite
  2. Write questions and speak about art using the imperfect
  3. Explain prefixes
  4. Explain reciprocal actions
  5. Ask and answer questions about leisure activities using reciprocal actions
  6. Read and write about Independence Day in various countries

Lesson 5: “Campanas de Boda (Wedding Bells)”

Students will participate in class activities and share their application with their peers. This lesson completes the unit goal of creating a partnership between schools and community health professionals offering students and families network of services that are accessible in different languages with an app.

Students will:

  • Listen to and write about a family occasion using the imperfect and preterite
  • Write questions and speak about art using the imperfect
  • Learn about prefixes
  • Learn about reciprocal actions
  • Ask and answer questions about leisure activities using reciprocal actions
  • Read and write about Independence Day in various countries
