Joseline’s Case: A case-based collaborative learning task focused on diabetes. (3-4 Class Periods)
Case-based collaborative learning task (CBCLT) description: During this case, students will investigate the underlying causes of Joseline’s symptoms and recent visit to the emergency room. They will discuss the impact of these symptoms on Joseline’s physical and mental well-being, while providing a diagnosis and subsequent plan of action to help Joseline attain optimal health.

KSDE Anatomy and Physiology (A&P) Standards Addressed:
- 2.1: Describe the basic structures and functions of cells, tissues, organs, and systems as they relate to homeostasis.
- 2.2: Compare relationships among cells, tissue, organs, and systems.
- 2.3: Explain body planes, directional terms, quadrants, and cavities.
- We may address some of the Components of standard 2.3, in this case, but did not feel that it needed a 3-dimensional modification.
- 2.4: Analyze the interdependence of the body systems as they relate to wellness, disease, disorders, therapies, and care rehabilitation.
- 8.5: Analyze diagrams, charts, graphs, and tables to interpret results commonly found in health-related fields.
- 3.3: Analyze body system changes in light of diseases, disorders, and wellness.
- 4.1: Identify methods to assess vital signs.
- 8.6: Recognize, organize, write and compile technical information and summaries that relate to health science
Revision of standards to make them 3-dimensional.
- 2.1 to AP2-1: Develop a model to explain how the structures and functions of cells, tissues, organs, and the body systems support homeostasis in the body.
- 2.2 to AP2-2: Construct an argument comparing relationships among cells, tissue, organs, and systems. [Clarification statement: If applicable, make a claim based on evidence about how relationships can contribute to changes that lead to feedback loops in the body.]
- 2.4 and 8.5 to AP2-4: Analyze and interpret data, including diagrams, graphs, and tables, to determine the interdependence of and changes in body systems as they relate to wellness, disease, and disorders.
- 3.3 and 8.5 to AP3-3: Read and evaluate information from multiple authoritative sources to suggest (cause/effect) applicable therapies, and care rehabilitation.
- 4.1 and 8.6 to AP4-1: Use vital sign data to make evidence-based inferences to suggest (cause/effect) the state of wellness in the body.
Lessons:
- Why is Joseline feeling the way she is?
- Analysis of Joseline’s emergency room test results
- What is diabetes?
