Professional Background

Susan Koerner, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, is a clinical assistant professor in the KU Department of Hearing and Speech at KU Medical Center in Kansas City, Kansas. She joined the faculty of the School of Health Professions in December 2022. She teaches coursework in communication of infants and toddlers in KU's master's degree program in speech-language pathology.

Koerner provides clinical supervision in a variety of clinics across the lifespan and specializes in assessment and intervention using augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems. Prior to her return to academia, Koerner served as a speech-language pathologist in a variety of clinical settings including school-based, outpatient rehabilitation, inpatient rehabilitation and outpatient pediatric clinics. Koerner is also the director the Augmentative and Alternative Communication Lab at KU Medical Center, which was founded in 2023 with generous donations from Children’s Miracle Network.

Academic Background
Koerner successfully defended her dissertation "Tiered Virtual Coaching as a Professional Development Model for In-Practice SLPs in AAC Intervention" in May of 2024. Her Ph.D. committee was lead by Nancy Brady, Ph.D., at the University of Kansas.

She received her master's degree in speech-language pathology from Fort Hays State University in 2014 and a bachelor's degree in speech-language hearing from the University of Kansas in 2012.
