Professional Background

Tami Gurley is an associate professor and PhD program director at the University of Kansas Medical Center. She received a PhD and master’s degree in economics from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and a BA in economics and political science from the University of Colorado, Boulder. Prior to joining the University of Kansas in 2012, she was on faculty at West Virginia University and prior to that, she was an economist at the U.S. Government Accountability Office. Dr. Gurley specializes in policy research using large databases including Medicaid claims data, controlled substance data, and tax return data.

Most recently, Dr. Gurley has developed forecasting models to predict the spread of COVID-19 in Kansas as part of the University of Kansas Executive Daily COVID-19 Digest Working Group. These forecasts are shared three times a week with leaders in public health, healthcare, and education and are publicly available on the Executive Daily COVID-19 Digest website.
