Dr. Stephen Thornton obtained a BS in Biochemistry from Kansas State University, a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Kansas School of Medicine, completed a Emergency Medicine Residency at the University of California - San Francisco-Fresno and Medical Toxicology Fellowship at the University of California - San Diego and is currently the medical director of the Kansas Poison Control Center at the University of Kansas Health System. He is board certified in emergency medicine, medical toxicology and addiction medicine.

Research interests include medical toxicology and addiction medicine including acute intoxication, chronic intoxication, intentional overdoses, recreational overdoses, drugs of abuse, novel drugs of abuse, envenomation by spiders and snakes, environmental poisonings, the use of antidotes and the treatment of substance use disorders. .
