Professional Background

Dr. Shin Hye Park is an Associate Professor at the University of Kansas School of Nursing (KU SON). She earned her PhD in Nursing from the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators.®

Dr. Park’s research focuses on nursing workforce research and on patient safety research. She has been funded as a principal investigator by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), as well as university and national organizations. Her work has been widely published in nursing and health services journals.

Dr. Park is dedicated to teaching and mentoring students at all academic levels, including undergraduate and graduate programs. Her primary teaching responsibilities include NRSG 946 Measurement Principles and Practice, NRSG 949 Synthesis Workshop II, and NRSG 953 Quantitative Research Methods and Application for PhD students. She also teaches NRSG 885 Evaluation and Analysis for Healthcare Effectiveness for master and DNP students, NRSG 898 Research Project in Nursing for master students, and mentors research projects for BSN Honors program students.

Dr. Park has also contributed to the academic community as a peer reviewer for prominent nursing and healthcare journals, including Medical Care, Nursing Research, Research in Nursing & Health, the Journal of Nursing Management, the International Journal for Quality in Health Care, and the Journal of Nursing Education. Throughout her career, she has received multiple honors, including the Midwestern Nursing Research Society Health Systems, Policy, and Informatics RIIG Mid-career Investigator Award, the University of Kansas Medical Center Faculty Investigator Research Award, and the CGEAN Experienced Career Award.

Research

Overview

Dr. Park has a robust and multifaceted research background encompassing nursing workforce, patient safety, and health services. Her specialized trainings and expertise span nursing health services research, advanced statistical methods, quantitative research methods, quality measure development, reliability and validity testing, and quality improvement projects. Her research has been primarily focused on nursing workforce issues, nursing work environments, and their profound impact on patient safety and quality of care.

Dr. Park has actively participated in various research projects investigating nursing workforce and patient safety using large-scale databases, such as the National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators (NDNQI), the University HealthSystem Consortium, the American Hospital Association Annual Survey of Hospitals, and the CMS Hospital Compare data. Furthermore, she has worked the development of indicators related to nursing workforce and patient safety for organizations such as the CMS Program of All‐Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE) and NDNQI hospitals.

Dr. Park served as the principal investigator for an R01-funded study by the Agency Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). This study investigated the effect of patient turnover on nursing care and patient safety in various types of inpatient units and hospitals. Additionally, she has received several grants from both internal and external sources, including the Sigma Theta Tau International Grants Award, the Council on Graduate Education for Administration in Nursing (CGEAN) Experienced Career Award, and the KU SON Faculty Research Award.
