Professional Background

I am a 0.6 FTE. I spend my time primarily seeing my private patients in the clinic at KUMC. For one week out of each month I supervise and guide a group of four Internal Medicine Residents as they see patients in their continuity clinics. I also work with medical students in a variety of ways, most recently as a facilitator in their small group learning experience (CBCL) but also as a preceptor in the clinic.

I have three reasons for working part-time: 1. Family responsibilities. 2. So I have time for my volunteer work and service outside KU, primarily around charitable healthcare. 3. So I have time for teaching activities within KUMC such as facilitating the case based collaborative learning sessions.

As an instructor, I hope to enable learners to develop their knowledge and skills through a variety of interactive mechanisms. This process starts with assessing the learner’s previous experience and goals, then tailoring the clinical or didactic experience to the learner. I encourage a process of assessing, discussing, questioning and redirecting. The extent to which this is done independently or jointly depends on the type of learner and the stage in their curriculum.

Clinic. I see patients in the General Internal Medicine clinic for five half day sessions each week. I see 7-9 patients each half day. I supervise and guide residents as they see patients in the General Internal Medicine continuity clinics for four ½ day sessions each month. Each resident sees 3-6 patients in a half day clinic, for a total of around 15 patients per half day resident clinic session. I provide ongoing continuity of care for a panel of patients that includes both my private patients and the patients assigned to my five residents. My current panel size is around 900 patients. I consistently do well in my monthly Quality Score report and my patient satisfaction surveys. I meet or exceed RVU goals each month.
