MIDWIVES KAN: Expanding and diversifying the maternity care workforce in Kansas
The MIDWIVES KAN project aims to increase the number of Certified Nurse-Midwives in Kansas and the Midwest region from diverse backgrounds including disadvantaged and/or underrepresented populations or those who serve rural and/or underserved populations using nurse-midwifery workforce traineeship.
Traineeship Eligibility
- Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) or post-graduate Certificate Nurse-Midwife students

Program Benefits
- Trainees can earn up to $25,000 per year for full-time study in nurse-midwifery
- Mentoring and robust clinical education in complex settings focused on care for underserved populations
- Enhanced curriculum focused on health equity, health promotion, and social determinants of health
- Innovative methods for teaching, including telehealth and simulation for evidence-based, timely topics
- Recruit and support diverse students for practice in Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSA) and Medically Underserved Areas (MUA) in Kansas and the region
Program Goals
- Increase the number of CNMs and diversify the maternal and perinatal health nursing workforce in Kansas and the Midwest region
- Enhance maternal health training to better address maternal mental health, maternal mortality, and morbidity risk factors
- Strengthen community-based training partnerships
Preceptor Incentives
- Preceptors in rural, urban, or tribal underserved areas can earn up to $4500 per year for hosting a midwifery student in your practice setting.
