Advanced Nursing Education Workforce (ANEW): Grow and Stay
The KU School of Nursing offers the Advancing Nursing Education Workforce (ANEW) Grow and Stay graduate nursing scholarship. It is designed to expand the nursing workforce needs of rural, urban, and/or tribal underserved populations in Kansas.
The project will focus on the areas of mental health, maternal-child health, and substance use disorders.
Traineeship Eligibility
- Nurse Practitioners (NPs) and Nurse-Midwives (NM) currently in practice in rural, urban, and/or tribal underserved communities
- Rural, urban, and/or tribal underserved nurses who want to become Family or Psychiatric-Mental Health NPs and NM
- Current students in their last year of advanced practice Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) training or in a post-master's advanced practice certificate in a primary care specialty
- Those with an expressed interest and commitment to practice in a rural, urban, and/or tribal underserved community-based clinic setting after program completion

Program Benefits
- Trainees can earn up to $25,000 for full-time study
- Simulation and skills training can be completed at the Salina or Kansas City campus locations
- Provides professional development in the clinical settings to improve retention, focus on employee/practice wellness, and encourage service within the rural setting
- Develops and sustains clinical faculty and preceptors
Program Goals
The ANEW: Grow and Stay program goals will positively serve rural, urban, and tribal underserved populations by:
- Increasing the trained number of nurse practitioners and certified nurse-midwives
- Enhancing clinical immersive experiences in each specialty area with a focus on increasing student clinical experiences
- Recruiting students and faculty from these populations
- Increasing the number of academic-clinical partnerships and training opportunities in these areas
- Providing clinical training, professional development, and preceptor support to our academic-clinical partners annually
We have developed relationships with colleagues across Kansas to facilitate future employment in underserved areas and to guarantee rich clinical experiences in targeted health professional shortage areas and frontier/rural areas.
