Leadership Preceptor Orientation & Training
Thank you for serving as a preceptor. Review the information to help you orient to the role of preceptor.
We are grateful you're willing to share your expertise in preparing future nurse leaders. Your role as a preceptor is to provide support and guidance to help interpret experiences and gain a broader worldview within education, informatics, organizational leadership or public health.
The course you are precepting the student for is a practicum or residency course in the Leadership Program. Specialties in the Leadership Program include Health Informatics, Nursing Education, Organizational Leadership and Public Health Nursing. The Leadership Program offers the Master of Science in Nursing (MS) and the Doctor or Nursing Practice (DNP) degrees.
- The student enrolled in practicum or residency may be enrolled in one credit hour, two credit hours or three credit hours. One credit hour equals 64 clock hours. The time onsite with the preceptor varies by course.
- Days and hours on site are to be determined by the student and preceptor.
- The preceptor is encouraged to discuss concerns with the student and/or course faculty.
- The student will provide you with the course syllabus, faculty contact information and a list of learning outcomes for the course. It is the student's responsibility to ensure those learning outcomes are met.
- The student is required to complete student activities for each learning outcome. You may assist the student in deciding on specific activities as it relates to the outcome and your needs. Products may vary based on specialty area (course or module development, program development, project management, system performance evaluation, learning tool development, literature review, policy development or revision, quality improvement project, etc.).
- It is expected that information acquired during the practicum is kept in confidence, according to your organizational standards.
- You are free to make arrangements with other key organizational leader's activities to assist the student in the attainment of learning outcomes. This is encouraged to help foster role development. However, the preceptor is the primary contact in the preceptor-student dyad and should spend sufficient time with the student to evaluate the student's progress and goal attainment (this includes face-to-face contact, phone conversations, email, etc.).
- Professional attire is required for students while onsite, at meetings and at conferences.
Evaluation
Academic Standards and Student Evaluation Criteria Preceptors need to be aware of the academic and professional standards set forth by the student's institution as well as the criteria and expected dates for the evaluation of the student's performance. Faculty members may include criteria for failure or the minimum performance required for the student to pass a practicum course. Leadership students are registered nurses and subject to the quality and safety criteria defined in their state nurse practice act.
Formative Evaluation
Formative evaluation is an assessment by the preceptor in the form of feedback to the student regarding their performance during the practicum. Ongoing feedback provides the student with the opportunity to enhance their performance during the course of the practicum or residency. Role performance areas in which the student has achieved competence should be discussed with the student as well as those areas that have been identified as needing improvement.
Summative Evaluation
Summative evaluation describes the student's performance, development and improvement at the conclusion of the practicum or residency. The summative evaluation will be completed by the course faculty in conjunction with the feedback from the preceptor through an electronic evaluation form. If you have questions or concerns, please contact the course faculty.
