Working Alongside My Daughter

My nursing career has been rewarding in more ways than I can describe. It has given me the opportunity to give back, to impact others who are less fortunate or vulnerable and to find joy in making a difference in other people’s lives.

As a parent, one of our most important roles is to lead by example for our kids as they come of age in this diverse world we live in. Recently, I was given the opportunity to work alongside my daughter in the hospital. The challenge was figuring out what role I would play; however, she came on board more prepared than I ever was.

Through this shared journey, we’ve found a new connection that we could not find in the past. It is different from days of teaching her how to change a tire. We’ve bonded by sharing work experiences, care plans and pointing out glaring flaws in an episode of “The Pitt.”

Her probing and inquisitive questions have prompted me to keep learning, pushing me towards seeking further education. Her hard work and dedication to the profession has been inspiring to me and others around her. She is a gift, as her name suggests, and I'm proud to be her dad.

Following in My Father’s Footsteps

Nursing runs deep in our family, but one of my favorite nurses is my dad. He’s always been someone I can always count on — whether it’s for help at work, school or life in general. He is always there, and not just for me, but for so many others who rely on his wisdom and support.

Even though he left me find my own path into nursing, his influence was always there, quietly guiding me. I wouldn’t be where I am today without his guidance along the way.

Being able to say that you work with your parent is something not many can say, and I am so grateful I can!
