Professional Background
Wanda Bonnel, PhD, APRN, ANEF, is Associate Professor at the University of Kansas School of Nursing. As a specialist in geriatrics and nursing education, she teaches courses in the masters, DNP, and PhD programs with a focus on gerontological nursing, clinical education, and health professions educator roles. She is a Fellow in the National League for Nursing Academy, a recipient of both the Chancellor's Distinguished Teaching Award at University of Kansas, and the University of Kansas Distinguished Nursing Alumna Award. As a geriatric nurse practitioner she serves on the “Journal of Gerontological Nursing” editorial board. She has published numerous peer reviewed abstracts and articles in geriatric and educator specialty journals including Clinical Advisor and Journal of Professional Nursing. She co-authored the textbooks, “Teaching Technologies in Nursing and the Health Professions” and “Proposal Writing for Clinical Nursing and DNP Projects”. Dr. Bonnel has served as a manuscript reviewer for selected journals and grant reviewer for the National League for Nursing and U.S. Health Resources and Services Administration.

Research
Overview
Dr. Bonnel's research emphasizes enhancing clinical educator skills to support patient care quality and safety. Her work integrates best practices in educational technologies and engaging reflective Learners. Additional projects relate to quality and safety dimensions for geriatric populations. Dr. Bonnel was Principal Investigator for two federally funded training grants from the Health Resources and Services Administration, Division of Nursing. Her team initiated the online Health Professions Educator Certificate which continues on. Her Career Ladder grant focused on developing clinical leaders for educator roles with measures to evaluate program structure, process, and outcomes. Her recent work includes best practices in the observer role in simulation as well as online course feedback to students. This work includes funded projects from Sigma Theta Tau Delta Chapter and National League for Nursing. Dr. Bonnel has chaired multiple dissertations with focus on technologies, including teaching and learning strategies for high fidelity simulation.
