Karen L Miller, Ph.D., RN, FAAN, FASAHP

Professional Background

Karen L. Miller, Ph.D., RN, FAAN, FASAHP is  Sr. Vice Chancellor, Dean and Professor Emeritus at the University of Kansas Medical Center. She held the position of Dean and Professor of the University of Kansas Schools of Nursing and Health Professions for 19 years and Sr. Vice Chancellor for 10 years. Prior to her academic appointments at the University of Kansas, Dr. Miller was Vice President and Chief Nursing Officer at The Children's Hospital, Denver, and Associate Professor at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center.

Dr. Miller completed her baccalaureate degree at Case Western Reserve University and earned Master's and Doctoral degrees from the University of Colorado. Her research and teaching have been in the areas of leadership and management of health care and academic organizations.  While Sr. Vice Chancellor and dean, Dr. Miller served as president of KU HealthPartners, Inc., a faculty practice plan and direct clinical services corporation for nursing and allied health professionals. She served on the Board of Directors of the University of Kansas Research Institute and the University of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City, Kansas. She has been a member of the Watson Caring Science Institute Board of Directors, Boulder, Colorado. In 2018 Dr. Miller completed tenure as a member of the Board of Directors of the Center for Practical Bioethics, Kansas City, Missouri.  She is currently a member of the Board of Trustees of Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science in Chicago, IL.  

Among past national appointments, Dr. Miller was a member of the 2002 Commission on Workforce for Hospitals & Health Systems of the American Hospital Association. In 2004 she completed a four-year term on the National Advisory Council on Nursing Education and Practice of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and served from 1995-2000 on the National Advisory Council of the National Institute of Nursing Research of the National Institutes of Health. She has served on the Workforce Advisory Council for the Association of Academic Health Centers in 2005-2007 as a representative for nursing and allied health professions. In 2008 she completed a two-year term as president of the Board of the Friends of the National Institute of Nursing Research. Dr. Miller was named a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing in 1995 and a Fellow in the Association of Schools of Allied Health Professions in 2010.
