Preceptor Development Workshop Series

The Preceptor Development Workshop Series courses help prepare preceptors to effectively teach and assess learners as well as communicate and collaborate with the University of Kansas Medical School.

Designed for community preceptors who teach KU School of Medicine students in their local practices, the courses help prepare preceptors to effectively teach and assess learners as well as communicate and collaborate with the medical school.

Educational webinars detail how physicians can become preceptors for KUMC medical students and information on obtaining Volunteer Faculty Appointments.

CME Credit: Credit Statement-4 AMA PRA Category 1 credit
(1 credit per session)

Preceptors are highly encouraged to participate in all four sessions via Zoom. If you do not have the Zoom app, you will need to download it at no charge. Pre-work for each session is essential for effective participation in the live session and for CME credit. Partial CME credit will be available if participation in a specific live session is not possible. Live sessions will be recorded for review later, but CME credit will not be available.

The workshop series (four sessions) will be offered twice each calendar year. Each 45-minute session will be offered twice per date at 7:15 a.m. AND 12:15 p.m. to accommodate practice schedules. Dates for 2023 to be announced.

Session 1

Preceptor Welcome & Orientation

This session will serve as an introduction to the preceptor experience including expectations and resources.

Learning Objectives

Describe expectations for precepting KU students including:

  • Scheduling of student experiences
  • Student expectations and learning objectives
  • Reporting/communication with KUSM (Kansas City & Wichita)
  • Finding support resources—people and materials
  • Work schedules and hours
  • Office staff and other colleagues

Session 2

Orienting Learners to Clinical Learning Environment

This session will focus on the medical education curriculum and student support at KU School of Medicine.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this session, preceptors will be able to:

  • Review the ACE curriculum
  • Adhere to legal and compliance issues concerning learners including sexual harassment and discrimination

Session 3

Effective Teaching in the Clinical Setting

This session will address effective teaching strategies in the clinical setting.

Session 4

Assessment in the Clinical Setting

This session will focus on learner assessment strategies including the KU School of Medicine Clinical Performance Review (CPR).

Learning Objectives

At the end of this session, preceptors will be able to:

  • Give effective feedback and formative assessment throughout the experience
  • Provide an end-of experience summative assessment
  • Construct an effective, brief narrative assessment
  • Complete the KUSM CPA
