The Rural Medical Education Network is an integral part of the University of Kansas School of Medicine's mission to partner with rural communities to provide medical education initiatives throughout the state.
To accomplish this mission, the state has been divided into five regions. Each region has a medical education director and a practicing physician who also works for the school's Office of Rural Medical Education.
The network directors help coordinate education efforts throughout Kansas. Each of the region's activities is accomplished through collaboration, led by the network director, between the University of Kansas School of Medicine and communities making use of local resources.
Rural Medical Education Network activities:
- Identify clinical resources within the region suitable for development as part of the medical school curriculum.
- Coordinate with third-year clerkship directors to provide educational programs.
- Assist health professionals within the region to prepare for and enhance teaching roles that enrich education and professional community practice.
- Obtain input from community teachers, curriculum planers, clinical departments, Academic and Student Affairs and other offices within the School of Medicine.
- Monitor School of Medicine programs within the region.
- Contribute to premedical and student recruitment programs for the region.
- Attend administrative meetings related to regional education programs when possible.
- Coordinate with clerkship directors concerning teaching at the network site.
- Participate in Scholars in Rural Health and Primary Care Workshop.
- Serve as preceptors for medical students.
