Phase II Curriculum, Year Four

During Year Four, students complete three additional required courses: Rural Preceptorship (which can also be taken as part of the Family Medicine Clerkship in Year 3) Critical Care and Sub-Internship.) Students round out Year 4 with elective rotations which may include up to three away rotations. During year four, students complete additional required clerkships and courses (Rural Preceptorship, Critical Care, Health of the Public, Subinternship) and electives. Credit hours for required courses, clerkships, and electives are listed below.

Kansas City

  • Rural Preceptorship: FAPR 900 Rural Preceptorship- KC- 4 credits
  • Critical Care - 4 credits
  • Subinternship - 4 credits
  • Electives 20 credits
    (At least 12 credits of electives must be clinical.)

Wichita

  • Rural Preceptorship: RLMD 976 or RLMD 977 or RLMD 978 (W) Rural Medicine- 4 credits
  • Critical Care - 4 credits
  • Subinternship - 4 credits
  • Electives 20 credits
    (At least 12 credits of electives must be clinical.)

Course requirements for the M.D. Degree

(Fourth Year = 32 weeks/8 months)

  • Rural Preceptorship
    FAPR 900 - (4 wks) 
  • Subinternship (4 wks)
    Choose from: Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Ob-Gyn, Otolaryngology, Pediatrics, Psychiatry, General Surgery, Plastic Surgery or Neurosurgery, Wilderness Medicine, Urology (KC-only), Orthopedic Surgery, Otolarnygology (KC-only), Plastic Surgery (KC-only).
  • Critical Care (4 wks)
    Choose from: Anesthesia (KC-only), Medicine ICU, Cardiac ICU, Pulmonary ICU (WI-only), Neonatal ICU, Pediatric ICU, Burn ICU, Neuro ICU (KC-only), Surgery ICU, Trauma ICU (WI-only) and Emergency Medicine (SA-only).
  • Electives (20 wks):
    No more than 8 credits of non-clinical/patient care electives can be counted toward graduation credits. A minimum of 12 credits of electives must be clinical/patient care electives.
