The Academy Membership Committee reviews application materials and provides the Academy with recommendations of new members as well as which category of membership would be the best fit. Academy members with voting rights (regular and emeritus members) make final decisions about which candidates are welcomed to the Academy.
Candidates may self-nominate or may be nominated by their department chair, the Senior Associate Dean for Medical Education, or by the Executive Dean. Candidates who meet the membership criteria are appointed to a 4-year term with the opportunity to renew membership thereafter.
Applications for associate membership must be sponsored by a current regular or emeritus member of the Academy. Associate members are those who aspire to become members of the Academy in the future and wish to participate in programs and activities sponsored by the Academy. Associate members do not have voting rights in the Academy. Associate membership lasts until the second subsequent annual meeting of the Academy or until they are instated as regular or emeritus members.
Emeritus members are appointed by the Academy and generally serve for life. Emeritus members receive the same privileges as regular members and are often called on to serve as mentors. Emeritus membership is intended to honor faculty with a history of exemplary teaching and faculty mentorship.
