While at The University of Kansas Medical Center, students have the opportunity to engage in programs, personal and professional development activities, and leadership experiences through participation in a variety of student organizations.

The Office of Student Engagement works closely with many student organizations dedicated to advocating and supporting underrepresented populations in medicine.

Latino Medical Students Association (LMSA)

The Latino Medical Students Association (LMSA) at the University of Kansas Medical Center seeks to find better ways to care for Kansas City's large Hispanic population as well as its other medically and socially underserved populations.

The LMSA chapter at the University of Kansas Medical Center - School of Medicine empowers medical students through service, mentorship, and advocacy for the health of the Latinx community. We are passionate about promoting health care and wellness among the underserved community of Kansas City.

In addition, we advocate for policy changes that improve Hispanic/Latinx needs at the local, state, and/or federal level. We are also dedicated to promoting the educational and professional advancement of aspiring healthcare providers at the undergraduate level.

Members are highly involved in a variety of community service activities such as health fairs, Spanish medical terminology presentations for medical students, Spanish health presentations for the community among other community events. We strongly encourage you to become a member of our team so together we can become the voice for underrepresented medical students!

Student National Medical Association (SNMA)

The Student National Medical Association (SNMA) is the nation’s oldest and largest student organization focused on the needs and concerns of minority medical students. Established in 1964 by Meharry Medical School, SNMA has a history rich in community service and education in order to meet the needs of minorities and underserved populations.

The association was established due to the recognition for a need to promote medication education among minority students, to encourage an increase in enrollment and retention in medical schools, and to advocate for improved, culturally sensitive health care services for neglected or underserved individuals. The SNMA represents thousands of minority medical/pre-medical students.
