Erik Ensrud, M.D.
Erik Ensrud, M.D., is a professor of neurology in the Department of Neurology at the University of Kansas Medical Center. He joined the faculty in 2021 after serving as a professor at Oregon Health and Science University with joint appointments in the departments of Neurology and Orthopedics and Rehabilitation.
Dr. Ensrud previously was director of neuromuscular and electrodiagnostic medicine and director of medical quality St. Luke's Rehabilitation Institute in Kansas City, Missouri. He also was an associate neurologist and director of the neuromuscular rehabilitation clinic at Brigham and Women's Hospital/Harvard Medical School in Boston, in addition to serving as director of the Neuromuscular Center and Electrodiagnostic Laboratory at the Boston VA Medical Center.
An active researcher and sought-after national presenter, Dr. Ensrud's broad ranging scholarly interests include, but are not limited to, exercise in neuromuscular and neurologic diseases, efficient and accurate physical examination of the neuromuscular system, orthoses for nerve and muscle disease, sensitive and efficient clinical tests for cervical myelopathy and electrical impedance myography. In addition to authoring numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals, book chapters and abstracts, Dr. Ensrud has served as the principal investigator on multiple grants and clinical trials. A noted teacher, he was honored by Oregon Health and Sciences University with the Distinguished Educator Award and the CME Educator Award.
Dr. Ensrud has a bachelor's degree in biology with a concentration in Asian Studies from St. Olaf College and a medical degree from the University of Minnesota School of Medicine-Minneapolis. He completed an innovative combined five-year residency in Neurology and Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Harvard Medical School then finished his fellowship training in neuromuscular medicine/EMG at Brigham and Women's Hospital.
Dr. Ensrud is a member of the American Association of Electrodiagnostic Medicine, American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and American Academy of Neurology (AAN). In addition to serving as an invited member of the Therapeutic Research in Accelerated Discovery (TRIAD) Council of the Hereditary Neuropathy Foundation, he sits on the Medical Advisory Board and Professional Relations Committee for the Myositis Association and is a member of the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Pain Management and Opioid Task Force.
