Submission Requirements
Here's everything you need to know about submission requirements for the annual GME Research Forum.
Overview
Abstracts and posters may be submitted from any computer with internet access on- or off-campus. All abstracts and posters must be submitted online. Acceptable research types include basic science, clinical, quality improvement, systematic lit reviews, and case reports/series.
Follow the instructions in the email from KU GME to submit an abstract and/or poster.
Abstract Formatting Requirements
- Microsoft Word document, single-spaced, using 12pt Arial font
- First line of the document should be the presentation title, in BOLD
- Second line of the document should be your name and department, in ITALICS as follows: Presenting Author: Jane Doe, Department of Biostatistics & Data Science
- Third line of the document should be your mentor's name, in ITALICS, as follows: Mentor: John Smith, PhD (if applicable)
- Fourth line of the document should list additional contributors, first name then last name, separated by commas, in ITALICS (if applicable)
- Next section of the document should be the abstract body organized as follows (250 word limit):
- Purpose/Introduction: Include the rationale for the study, research question and objectives of the study.
- Methods/Materials: Include a brief description of the research design, techniques, models of inquiry and sources of data.
- Results: Summarize quantitative/qualitative data or outcomes, including any results which are statistically significant.
- Conclusions: Include a brief interpretation of the results and implications for your field of study.
- Following the abstract body, list any conflict of interest statements, in ITALICS (if applicable)
- Lastly, acknowledge any grant support, in ITALICS (if applicable)
Abstract Presentation Requirements
- Record yourself presenting using any software. If Panopto (supported by TLT) is not used to record your presentation you must upload your digital file in to Panopto and set the presentation as open access so any judge with the link can view your presentation
- Recording must show presenter(s) and PowerPoint slides
- No longer than 5 minutes
- No more than 8 PowerPoint slides
- Use one of the three templates provided on the KU Brand Center
The primary purpose of the GME Research Forum is to provide residents and fellows with an opportunity to gain experience with presenting research. Therefore, we strongly encourage recorded presentations to be made in front of a live audience, i.e. clinicians, faculty, fellows, residents, and/or staff.
Both an abstract and recorded presentation meeting the requirements listed above must be submitted for your submission to be scored by judges.
Poster Requirements
- To be eligible for an award, you MUST be do a voiceover presentation of your poster in PowerPoint that describes your research. The time limit is 2 minutes.
- Posters must be no more than one page/slide, oriented landscape style.
- Posters should include the following sections:
- Purpose/Introduction: Include the rationale for the study, research question and objectives of the study.
- Methods/Materials: Include a brief description of research design, techniques, models of inquiry and sources of data.
- Results: Summarize quantitative/qualitative data or outcomes, including any statistically significant results.
- Conclusions: Include a brief interpretation of the results and implications for your field of study.
On-Campus Resources
The Writing Center on campus can help if you're feeling overwhelmed, not quite sure where to start, and/or just need a little writing assistance. They will provide free, individualized, one-on-one feedback on your written work. 30- or 60-minute consultations are available.
The Open Access Author Fund is designed to heighten the visibility and accessibility of the University's scholarship and to support faculty, staff and graduate students in all disciplines who choose to publish in open access journals that require author-fees for accepted manuscripts.
