Dean's Level I Grant Award

University of Kansas School of Medicine - Wichita (KUSM-W)
Dean's Facilities and Administrative Costs (F&A) Pilot Research Grants (Level I)

FY2022

Request for Proposals (RFP)

Indirect dollars generated by KUSM-W sponsored program grants are made available at the Dean's discretion to stimulate research and scholarly activity. As such, this RFP is re-issued annually.

Purpose:  To provide money to department chairs and program directors to be used for faculty research projects which will include resident research and scholarly activity. The focus is on "faculty research" to encourage individual faculty/faculty teams to develop research/scholarly themes and minimize research that is the product of any one person's interest for a short period of time (i.e. research silos).

Scope: This initiative is broad in scope and includes all KUSM-W faculty. The proposals must delineate how the research will advance and promote scholarly activity in a residency program(s). The product of this research must be able to be credited in the residency application process for re-accreditation for the department(s) involved.

Criteria: Any proposal should be seen as an opportunity to gain expertise in program and grant development. As such, the Office of Research strongly recommends that a grant-writing course (in person or via webinar) be taken prior to submission. It is also strongly recommended that the proposal be reviewed and recommended by the department research committee. Projects should be designed for completion in one year. The review criteria for this RFP are essentially the same as those used by Federal agencies:

  1. Scientific, technical, or clinical significance and originality of proposed research
  2. Appropriateness and adequacy of the research design and methodology proposed to conduct the research
  3. Qualifications and research experience of the Principal Investigator and staff, particularly, but not exclusively, in the area of the proposed research
  4. Availability of the resources necessary to perform the research
  5. Appropriateness of the proposed budget and duration in relation to the proposed research
  6. Provisions for the protection of human subjects
  7. Compliance with the Conflict of Interest Policy
  8. Potential for future external funding possibilities

Amount: Up to $3,000 for one (1) year.

Proposal Format: The application process will be streamlined using the DEPARTMENT REQUEST FOR DEAN'S F&A (FACILITIES AND ADMINISTRATIVE COSTS) PILOT RESEARCH/SCHOLARLY ACTIVITY FUNDS form.

In addition to the above-mentioned items, each application is to include the scientific review checklist.

Budget: Budget must be realistic and show actual costs. Examples of use would include postage for surveys, mailing costs, etc. Requests for travel, publication costs, and printing costs would be examples of scholarly activity. Please review Travel Policy & Procedures.

No indirect costs, overhead, or administrative costs are allowed on the requests. No supplanting of existing resources.

IRB Approval: If awarded in research, research funds will be released once evidence of IRB approval is provided.

Reporting: Progress reports will be required from the awardees at the conclusion of the grant. The Department Chair of designee will be responsible for an annual accounting of these expenditures and any resulting scholarly activity.

Submission: All proposals must be submitted electronically to the Office of Research. Send your proposal in PDF format, via e-mail, to KU School of Medicine-Wichita Associate Dean for Research, KUWichitaResearch@kumc.edu.

Timeline: Submissions may be made at any time.

Award Announcement: Approximately six (6) weeks after submission.

At that time, the principal investigator will be required to submit appropriate animal/human subject approvals.
