KU School of Medicine-Wichita Pediatrics, Critical Care Division

Patient care is a multidisciplinary team approach with contributions by pediatric-trained nursing, pharmacy, respiratory therapy, physical therapy, and social workers, who along with a multitude of pediatric subspecialized physicians provide state of the art patient care. Our division is associated with Wesley Children's Hospital providing in-facility day and night coverage, seven days a week in the newly expanded and remodeled PICU.

Our division also provides coverage of Wesley's Pediatric Sedation Unit, an eleven-bed outpatient pediatric unit whose purpose is to facilitate the successful completion of potentially painful diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, scanning, or testing with minimal discomfort and stress to the patient.

In addition, the Pediatric Critical Care division actively trains and mentors physician assistants, advanced pediatric registered nurses, medical students, and residents. We also provide education and training of a variety of health care providers (nurses, paramedics, pharmacists, medical students, residents, physicians) through a twice-yearly, two-day course on the Pediatric Fundamentals of Critical Care Support. Our division supports the American College of Surgeons designated Level 2 Pediatric Trauma program at Wesley Medical Center, and participates with the Virtual Pediatric Systems' pediatric critical care database to provide comparative analysis toward the improved provision of effective, efficient, and equitable patient care. Our division cares for over 2,500 pediatric patients from central and western Kansas, and northern Oklahoma, and instructs more than 80 medical students and 25 residents each year.
