Learn details of the call schedule for resident physicians in the Psychiatry Residency Program at KU School of Medicine-Wichita.
Call Schedule Overview
- PGY-1, PGY-2 and PGY-3 residents take call; PGY-4s do not.
- Call rotates across residents, typically every six weeks.
- All overnight call is from home.
- Faculty on call is always available by secure messaging or phone.
- Services are capped to protect educational aspect of the residency.
PGY-1 and PGY-2 Call
Weekday “Short Call”
- Occurs from 5-7 p.m. on weekdays while on inpatient rotations (Adult, Child, Senior Behavioral Health).
- Overnight call from home, for one week, switches on Mondays.
- Involves answering pages and evaluating new admissions.
Weekend "Long Call"
- Shifts (7 a.m.-7 p.m.) for PGY-1 and 7 a.m.-noon (usually) for PGY-2; in-house.
- Overnight call from home.
- Covers adult and adolescent inpatient unit.
- Responsible for rounding, admissions and answering pages.
PGY-3 Call
Weekend
- Weekend - rounds on the senior unit and sees patients in the ED.
- Weekday - occasional admission to senior behavioral health unit from 7-9 p.m.
- Overnight call from home for senior behavioral health and rare emergency clinic calls.
