More than 46 million, or 16.5%, of Americans meet the criteria for having substance use disorder, yet 94% of them receive no treatment (Han et al., 2021). Due to the growing opioid overdose fatalities and misuse, access to care is critical.

The purpose of Preparing Physicians to Treat Addiction is to improve access to substance use disorder (SUD) care in Sedgwick County, Kansas. The goal for PPTA of Sedgwick County is to equip, train and educate current and future physicians to engage with, prevent, evaluate, treat, monitor and refer SUD patients who present to them in their own practices in Sedgwick County and the surrounding areas.

The University of Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita’s Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences and the Department of Population Health were funded this grant by the Sunflower Foundation’s Kansas Fights Addiction grant program.

Addiction Medicine Fellowship

The University of Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita’s Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences has received approval from the Graduate Medical Education Committee to begin the accreditation application process for an Addiction Medicine Fellowship. The fellowship will provide didactic education and supervised clinical experience in the treatment of patients with addiction, including detoxification, pharmacotherapy for addiction, abstinence-based recovery models, consultation for medical and psychiatric hospital services, and psychosocial approaches to the treatment of patients with addiction. The program must be accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education and provide 12 months full time (or 24 months part time) progressively supervised clinical experience for physicians from any specialty. The Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences anticipates that the Addiction Medicine Fellowship will be fully accredited by July 2025.

Physicians interested in the Addiction Medicine Fellowship can reach out to Shelly Small at ssmall2@kumc.edu for more information.
