Health Communication Solutions Lab

About
The Health Communication Solutions Lab in the Department of Population Health at the University of Kansas School of Medicine–Wichita develops technology-based health communication solutions designed to increase the reach and effectiveness of high-quality health information, particularly for underserved populations. We apply behavioral science theory and artificial intelligence to create, test and scale evidence-based communication strategies, including rapid prototyping of digital tools and multimedia storytelling. Through community-centered design and applied research, the lab supports the development of scalable solutions that improve access to health services and contribute to better health outcomes.
Our innovative and practice-driven approach centers on creating, testing and guiding technology-based health communication solutions:
- Create: We actively design and build multimedia health communication solutions, including rapid prototypes of digital tools, AI-enabled applications and community-centered storytelling assets. Our lab emphasizes creativity and hands-on development, producing usable first versions of health communication interventions rather than only studying them.
- Test: We rigorously evaluate these solutions through applied research and evidence-based methods. Our testing integrates behavioral science theory, mixed-methods research, and real-world data to assess clarity, relevance, reach, and effectiveness, particularly among underserved populations.
- Guide: We translate findings into actionable recommendations, best practices, and guidelines for health communication strategy, information architecture, and technology-based and AI-supported systems. This includes advising on how health information and digital tools can be designed, structured, and scaled responsibly to support better health outcomes
We are dedicated to advancing population health by sharing our innovations, fostering strong community collaborations and preparing the workforce to meet emerging health challenges.
