The Wichita Center for Graduate Medical Education (WCGME) is a not-for-profit consortium consisting of the University of Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita, Ascension Via Christi Regional Medical Center and Wesley Medical Center. WCGME employs all residents in Wichita, providing a competitive salary range and fringe-benefit package. All fringe-benefit reimbursements will be provided by WCGME.

Educational Allowances

PALS and NRP Registration Fee:
PALS and NRP certification and recertification fees provided at no cost to residents.

Temporary Licensure and Initial DEA Registration:
Temporary Kansas license and initial DEA registration provided at no cost for PGY-1 residents.

Professional Liability Insurance (Malpractice):
Residents will be provided with insurance with limits as required by Kansas law, plus excess coverage provided via the Kansas HealthCare Stabilization Fund.

Professional Memberships:
Yearly membership to the American Academy of Pediatrics and PREP course materials.

Research Presentation Scholarship:
Residents can apply for a scholarship of up to $2,500 to present their research at a conference. Up to five resident awards per year. 

Insurance

Health Insurance:
Health and dental insurance for the residents and their dependents is provided at a minimal monthly charge, through WCGME's group insurance plan.

Life Insurance/Accidental Death and Dismemberment:
Full payment of premiums for life insurance and accidental death and dismemberment, each equal to annual salary raised to the next even one thousand.

Long-Term Disability:
Full payment of premiums for long-term disability which will pay 60% of monthly earnings up to $1,500 after 180 days disability

Salary Advance for Moonlighting Insurance:
Salary advances are available to purchase malpractice insurance for moonlighting activities that have been approved by the program director.

Hospital meals, pagers and parking

Meals:
Free hot breakfast and free hot lunch are provided daily courtesy of Wesley Medical Center in DocDining (This is a wonderful perk!). Additionally, residents receive a monthly allowance, based on number of calls, to purchase food from the hospital cafeteria.

Pagers:
Pagers and phones are provided at no cost.

Parking:
Free parking right at the entrance to Wesley Medical Center is provided to residents.

Vacation/Leave

All residents received 20 days of paid time off annually (non-cumulative) to be used at a time approved by the program director. The program director will determine whether or not make-up service and education are necessary in order to certify credit for the residency year. Need for additional time off, without pay, will be considered on an individual basis.

FMLA:
Residents may take up to 12 weeks of concurrent or intermittent leave within a rolling year with a qualifying event in accordance with the Family and Medical Leave Act. Time will initially be deducted from vacation and sick days, then transition to unpaid leave. Our program is very flexible, even offering an infant care elective. You also have access to additional WCGME leave benefits under certain conditions. The program director will determine whether or not make-up service and education are necessary in order to certify credit for the residency year.

Retreats and Social Gatherings

Biannual pediatric/med-peds retreats take place in the spring and fall of each year. Pediatric Interest Group (PIG) events are bimonthly throughout the year. Social gatherings with all WCGME residency programs are hosted on the first Fridays of each month. Many more informal gatherings occur regularly.
