Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery (Urogynecology)

Description of the Resident Experience
Residents on the urogynecology rotation will assist with and/or observe the following: evaluation and treatment of bladder and bowel prolapse; urinary retention and/or incontinence; pelvic pain and dysuria; simple and complex urodynamics studies to evaluate the bladder filling and emptying function; cystourethroscopy and anoscopy as an office procedure; therapeutic procedures including periurethral bulking agent injection; abdominal and laparoscopic retropubic urethropexy; urethral slings; sacrocolpopexy; fistula repair; anal sphincter repair; and sacrospinous ligament fixation.

Resident Goals and Objectives:

  • Residents learn to describe normal anatomic supports of the vagina, rectum, bladder, urethra and uterus/vaginal cuff and its embryological correlates including the bony pelvis, pelvic floor nerves and musculature and connective tissue
  • Residents will be able to summarize the normal function of the lower urinary tract during filling and voiding phases and the physiologic mechanisms for urinary continence
  • Describe the principal etiologies of pelvic floor defects, urinary incontinence and fecal incontinence including effects of pregnancy and delivery
  • Identify anatomic defects associated with pelvic floor support disorders
  • Characterize the major types of urinary incontinence
  • Become familiar with evaluation and treatment approaches for chronic bladder pain syndrome/ interstitial cystitis
  • Diagnose various voiding disorders
  • Diagnose urinary tract fistulae that may involve pelvic organs as well as rectovaginal fistulae
  • Become comfortable with placement of vaginal pessaries
  • Become knowledgeable in the evaluation and treatment options of stress and urge incontinence
  • Urethral diverticulum evaluation
  • Diagnosis and treatment of acute chronic and recurrent urinary tract infections in pregnant and non-pregnant women
  • Surgical treatment of pelvic organ prolapse
  • Demonstrate understanding of normal bowel function and abnormal bowel function as it relates to pelvic floor pathophysiology
  • Understand the methodology of the various urodynamic evaluations and interpretation of such testing
