Currently, the department has the largest perinatal service in the state of Kansas. The service accepts transported patients from the majority of the state of Kansas as well as from neighboring states. Wesley Medical Center has a Level 3 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit with 40 beds.

Description of the Resident Experience
A PGY-3 obstetrics and gynecology resident runs the service and works in close association with the staff, participating actively in the care and delivery of high-risk obstetrical patients. They receive a broad-based experience in the daily high-risk outpatient clinic, which includes a clinic that focuses on the diabetic obstetric patient, fetal anomalies and genetic abnormalities. The resident performs procedures such as ultrasound, amniocentesis and color-doppler vascular studies. The department also works with a pediatric cardiologist to perform fetal echocardiograms. Residents counsel women regarding nutrition, exercise, health maintenance, high-risk behaviors, and preparation for pregnancy and childbirth.
