General Clerkship
The Obstetrics & Gynecology Clerkship at KU School of Medicine-Wichita is an eight-week intensive study of obstetrics and gynecology for third-year medical students. It is the goal of the faculty in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology to give students a well-rounded experience to best prepare them to be the highest quality physicians in the great tradition of the University of Kansas School of Medicine.
Experiences
Students experience ambulator, inpatient and outpatient Obstetrics and Gynecology. Students will have opportunities to experience patient care in the following areas:
- Labor and Delivery
- OB-GYN surgery
- General OB-GYN ambulatory clinics—both resident and faculty private practice
- OB-GYN specialties including but not limited to:
- Maternal Fetal Medicine
- Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility
- Urogynecology
- Gynecologic Oncology
- Family Planning
Students will be involved in deliveries, gynecologic surgeries, prenatal visits, well-woman exams and gynecologic health visits. While on the rotation, students will spend time in at least one area of focus in OB-GYN or a closely related field. The combination of both experiences will offer both ambulatory clinic and surgical opportunities.
Expectations and Responsibilities
Students will achieve the learning objectives for the rotation which are based upon the nationwide OB-GYN curriculum from the Association of Professors in Obstetrics and Gynecology (APGO). This will include a combination patient encounters, didactics and self-learning to achieve these goals.
Beyond academic success, clerkship students should demonstrate high-quality behaviors in the areas of professionalism, data collection and documentation, interpretation of data, patient and interprofessional collaboration, and communication and technical skills.
Students will take histories, perform physical examinations, present patients to supervisors and develop skills for ordering and documenting. Students will have hands-on experiences in labor and delivery and the operating room some of which are more unique to the field of OB-GYN and surgery, but many that are utilized throughout the profession, including the high important area of participating in and promoting a culture of patient safety.
As a core clerkship, the obstetrics & gynecology rotation prepares the KU medical student to have a solid foundation in OB-GYN which will serve them well in any specialty they choose as they are able to apply the knowledge and skills gained on this rotation for the remainder of their career.
