Fourth-Year Rotations
*At any point, and with the well-being of students, staff and patients at the center of this decision, we will abide by the guidance set forth by KU regarding visiting students from other institutions (international or domestic). Please contact us directly if there are any questions.
This does not affect your eligibility to apply for a residency position, and you are still encouraged to apply for our program.
Sub-Internship and Clerkships
The University of Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita Obstetrics & Gynecology Residency Program has several rotations available for fourth-year rotations. As only one elective may be taken per student, it is our goal to expose the student to all aspects of the residency program and provide the opportunity to work with several residents and faculty. Students will participate in resident didactic sessions and attend all conferences. Upon completion of a senior elective or sub-I, the student will have an excellent understanding of life as a resident and attending in obstetrics & gynecology.
Sub-I
OBGN 998 Sub-Internship in Obstetrics (4).
The student will function as a subintern in multiple clinical environments with supervised but advancing clinical responsibilities that will assist in preparation for internship. Two weeks will be spent the obstetrics units which will include one week of night call. That portion of the rotation includes coverage of emergency / unscheduled cesarean sections and Emergency Department coverage. One week includes surgical experience and floor rounds with the Gynecologic Oncology team. One week is spent in private practice clinic with the program director, chairman or additional faculty members as determined by the department. The student will be evaluated through faculty judgment for general information, and degree of attainment of skills necessary for matriculation into the intern year in Obstetrics and Gynecology residency. It is anticipated the subintern should have achieved competency in the ACGME Level 1 milestones for Obstetrics and Gynecology by the completion of this rotation.
Obstetrics
OBGN 976 General Obstetrics and Gynecology (2-4).
The student will be involved in the breadth of the practice of specialists in general obstetrics and gynecology. This will include supervised experience in gynecologic surgery, including gynecologic oncology, and on one of the labor and delivery units at Wesley Medical Center for three of the four weeks. Scheduled conferences include weekly case conference and didactic lectures on Wednesday morning. One week of the rotation will be spent in private practice clinic with the program director, chairman or additional faculty members as determined by the department. The student will be evaluated through faculty judgment for general information, and degree of attainment of skills necessary for matriculation into the intern year in Obstetrics and Gynecology residency.
Sub-Specialty Rotations
MFM
OBGN 977 Maternal-Fetal Medicine (2-4).
The student will be assigned to the Maternal Fetal Medicine Obstetrical Service at Wesley Medical Center for two weeks of the four-week rotation. The student will participate in the management of complicated obstetrical conditions in a role similar to that of an intern in hospital and outpatient settings. The student will attend all didactic conferences and attend any available conferences with the perinatologists during the rotation. The rotation will also include one week of supervised experience on one of the labor and delivery units at Wesley Medical Center. There will be time spent during the rotation in ambulatory OB-GYN clinics with the program director, chairman or additional faculty members as determined by the department. The student will be evaluated by faculty judgment for general information, and degree of attainment of relevant skills necessary for matriculation into the intern year.
REI
OBGN 995 Special Topics in Obstetrics (2-4).
This elective is designed to provide clinical and/or research experience in topics of special interest not otherwise represented in the curriculum. Existing examples include: Bootcamp, Research and Scholarship in Obstetrics and Gynecology, Rural OB-GYN and Urogynecology. The Bootcamp elective will be offered one time per year at a specific, predetermined two-week period in the spring. The student, in consultation with department faculty, may design specific objectives, reading assignments, and the mechanism for course evaluation. Student performance will be evaluated using the standard elective evaluation form.
Gynecologic Oncology
OBGN 979 Gynecologic Oncology (2-4).

Rural Preceptorship: Obstetrics and Gynecology
RLMD 979 Rural OB (2)
Rural Preceptorship in Obstetrics and Gynecology is a four-week clinical rotation during which the student works with a practicing obstetrician and gynecologist in Kansas. The student will experience a one-to-one teaching/learning relationship in the rural setting and will be exposed to and explore both professional and non-professional aspects of the various roles a physician plays in the community. The student will participate in procedures in both ambulatory and hospital settings. Students may also assist in transfers from smaller communities. Evaluation consists of clinical performance as assessed by the rural preceptor and completion of a reflection assignment related to rural OB-GYN. Prerequisite: Senior standing and OBGN 975.
OB-GYN Residency Prep Course
OBGN 981 OB Bootcamp (2)
OB-GYN Bootcamp is a two-week rotation for fourth-year students who have matched into OB-GYN residency. The goal of this rotation is to refine student’s obstetrical and gynecologic skills and equip students with knowledge and tools that will contribute to their being a successful resident. This rotation will include in-person and virtual didactic sessions, simulations, interactive skill building and built-in time for students to research the residency programs where they have matched. Students will be expected to complete the APGO Prep for Residency question bank and set personal and professional goals for their intern year of residency.
