Applicant Overview

Thank you for your interest in applying to the Med/Peds program. Our program participates exclusively with the National Residency Matching Program. All applicants must apply through the ERAS system (Electronic Residency Application Service). Our application deadline is Nov. 11. Interviews will be scheduled through the mid-December.

We strongly encourage all M.D. applicants to take their USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 CK no later than November so we can review exam results prior to interviews and, most importantly, have results before ranking begins in February.

We strongly encourage all D.O. applicants to take their COMLEX Level I and Level 2 no later than November so we can review exam results prior to interviews and, most importantly, have results before ranking begins in February. D.O. students are NOT required to take USMLE nor is it expected.

The following are answers to some common questions:

  • D.O. students are NOT required or expected to take both COMLEX AND Step 1/2.
  • Observerships are not available through the Med/Peds program.
  • Student rotation opportunities must be coordinated with the IM and Peds Clerkship coordinators. They might be able to arrange a two-week rotation back to back – however, it can be an eventful journey to get one scheduled.
  • Please provide three letters of recommendation.
  • We accept J-1 visas only.
  • We require ECFMG certification before interviewing.
  • We accept applications through ERAS only.
  • FMG’s: If graduation date is greater than one year from the time of application, we require medical/clinical experience in the U.S.

Interviews will be conducted virtually via Zoom. All interviews will be scheduled through Thalamus.

A virtual Meet & Greet/Happy Hour with our current residents will be offered the Sunday evening prior to your scheduled interview.

The University of Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita will be accepting applications only through the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) program. Applications can be submitted through November 11.

Basic requirements for international medical graduates are as follows:

  • There is no minimum USMLE (United States Medical Licensing Exam) score. However, approximately the top 10 percent of scores are accepted for interview. We have approximately 160 applications each year from both international and U.S. graduates and only 20-30 receive interview invitations. USMLE scores are one of the first filtering factors used.
  • International medical graduates must have passed the CSA (Clinical Skills Assessment) prior to December 15 for consideration.
  • We prefer an applicant's graduation year to be no more than 2 years from the date of application. We require significant recent clinical experience in the U.S. to consider any IMG whose graduation date is greater than 2 years.
  • Graduation year from your medical school is considered secondary to USMLE scores, and in correlation with activities undertaken since graduation.
  • Our program accepts residents on J-1 visas only. We do not offer H-1B visas.
