KU School of Medicine-Wichita offers outstanding clinical training in a fully accredited ACGME residency program. Training in internal medicine is offered as a three-year categorical program and we also offer one-year preliminary medicine training. Additionally, the Internal Medicine Department works closely with the Pediatrics Department in offering a four-year Medicine-Pediatrics training program.
Our program is designed to allow maximum clinical exposure to patients while remaining compliant with ACGME program requirements. This is achieved through a "4+1" scheduling model that separates inpatient and outpatient rotations and allows residents to focus on the learning experience of each clinical rotation, followed by a focused ambulatory clinic experience. We use a combination of inpatient and outpatient clinical experiences, simulations, didactics and scholarly activities to evaluate residents on their trajectory of learning as they progress through residency. Our unique training environment includes exposure to three different hospital systems: Wesley Medical Center, Ascension Via Christi Hospitals and the Robert J. Dole VA Medical Center. Residents also have their own clinic with KU School of Medicine-Wichita that includes dedicated faculty and staff to support their ambulatory experience.
Residents completing training in our program are prepared to handle any challenge they may face. Our rotations are designed to provide broad clinical exposure while offering flexibility in helping residents achieve their career goals. Whether they plan to enter rural primary care or stay in an urban area as a hospitalist, primary care physician or subspecialist, our residents are given opportunities to shape and mold their training experience to better prepare them for their future careers.
Sincerely,

The Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita is dedicated to developing leaders who strive toward excellence and innovation in student and resident education, research and clinical care. Our team of outstanding educators and clinicians are committed to providing high-quality training environments and compassionate patient care experiences across clinical divisions. These experiences are enhanced through lasting relationships with our community partners and subspecialty volunteer faculty. The core principles of our department (integrity, discipline, compassion and purpose) drive our faculty, staff and trainees in our mission to improve the lives and communities in Wichita and throughout the state of Kansas.
The mission of KU School of Medicine-Wichita is to train doctors who can improve the health of Kansans. Our residency program functions within this context, with the goal of training well-rounded internal medicine physicians who can tailor their training experience around their career goals. Our rotations are designed to provide a broad clinical exposure that fully prepares residents for a career as a primary care physician, a hospitalist or a rural physician who may join a practice which requires them to function in the absence of subspecialists. Additionally, residents wishing to enter subspecialty training not only receive excellent clinical training in general internal medicine but also have the unique experience of working directly under the supervision of subspecialty faculty including volunteer community faculty members. Residents are given extensive support to perform the necessary scholarly activities to enter competitive subspecialty fellowship training programs across the country following graduation.
