Application Process
The Department of Internal Medicine participates exclusively with the National Residency Matching Program. All applicants must apply through the ERAS system (Electronic Residency Application Service). If you are a preliminary resident applying to radiology in Wichita, please apply to BOTH internal medicine and radiology residency programs.
Applications can be submitted through the end of November for consideration - interviews will be scheduled through the end of December.
We strongly encourage all applicants to take their Step 1 and Step 2 CK no later than November so that our program can review exam results prior to interviews and, most importantly, have results before ranking begins in February.
ECFMG Certification - general information
Medical schools outside the United States and Canada vary in educational standards, curriculum and evaluation methods. The purpose of ECFMG Certification is to assess the readiness of international medical graduates to enter U.S. residency and fellowship programs that are accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). See additional information below for international medical graduates.
Interviews are scheduled during the months of October through December, virtually via Zoom, and are offered to applicants who have submitted an application through ERAS. (Applications sent by fax or email will not be reviewed). A typical itinerary includes the following:
- Introduction to the program
- Interviews with Department of Internal Medicine faculty
- Virtual hospital tours and resident interactions
The Internal Medicine department hosts a non-formal virtual happy hour the Monday evening prior to your interview with current residents.
More information will be provided when your interview is scheduled.
Benefits for KU School of Medicine residents can be found on the website for the Wichita Center for Graduate Medical Education (WCGME).
Basic requirements for international medical graduates are as follows:
- Our program accepts residents only on a J1 visa.
- There are no minimum USMLE scores required. We receive over 4,000 applications each year, from both foreign and U.S. graduates and only 3% receive interview invitations. USMLE scores are one of the first filtering factors used by our program, but not the only factor in selecting an applicant.
- International medical graduates must have passed Step 1 and Step 2 CK & CS prior to Nov. 1 for consideration; an ECFMG certificate validation of completion is preferable, however, is not required at time of application submission. ECFMG certificate is required by Jan. 1 to be eligible for the rank list. Our program will review applications even if Step 1 and/or 2 were not passed on the first attempt.
- Experience in the United States is recommended but not required by our program.
- Your graduation year from medical school is considered in correlation with medical education activities and/or medical vocational activities undertaken since graduation. Graduates who have not been active in medicine for 2-5 years will not be considered.
- Residency begins July 1, there are no early start dates.
A one year (12 month) general internal medicine PGY 4 or PGY 5 chief residency position is available through the University of Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita Internal Medicine Department.
