Application Process

The Department of Internal Medicine, including the Gastroenterology Fellowship Program, participates exclusively with the National Residency Matching Program. All applicants must apply through the ERAS system (Electronic Residency Application Service).

Applications can be submitted through the end of October for consideration. Interviews will be scheduled through the end of October.

ECFMG certification - general information

Medical schools outside the United States and Canada vary in educational standards, curriculum and evaluation methods. The purpose of ECFMG certification is to assess the readiness of international medical graduates to enter U.S. residency and fellowship programs that are accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME). Interviews are scheduled during the months of August through October and conducted in a virtual format. Interviews are offered to applicants who have submitted an application through ERAS (applications sent by fax or email will not be reviewed).

A typical itinerary includes the following:

  • Introduction to the program
  • Interviews with department faculty
  • Open discussion with current fellows/residents

Basic requirements for international medical graduates are as follows:

    1. Our program accepts residents only on a J1 visa.
    2. There are no minimum USMLE scores required.
    3. Fellowship begins July 1; there are no early start dates.
