All residents entering the General Surgery Residency Program at the University of Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita, Department of Surgery, are required to complete at least one research study during their residency.
We are fortunate to have a dedicated research scientist, Jared Reyes, Ph.D., who provides invaluable support to residents throughout the research process, including project development, statistical analysis and manuscript preparation for publication.
- All research projects must be approved by the Surgery Research Council and coordinated through the surgery research scientist.
- Eligible projects include prospective or retrospective studies.
- All projects must receive approval from the KU School of Medicine-Wichita Institutional Review Board (IRB) and the IRBs of participating hospitals. Projects without IRB approval will not fulfill the research requirement.
To fulfill this requirement, residents must:
- Complete the research study
- Write a manuscript prepared for submission to a peer-reviewed journal
Manuscripts must be submitted to the research scientist or the chairperson of the Department of Surgery Research Council by July 1 of the resident’s fifth year. Failure to meet this deadline may result in a delay of the resident’s program completion certificate.
