The Department of Family & Community Medicine strives to find a placement that meets the professional goals and interests of students who are seeking to complete their rural preceptorship in family medicine within established guidelines. To optimize your chances of being placed at a site that meets your goals and interests, please contact the course coordinator as soon as you know when you are planning on completing the rural preceptorship.
Many rural sites provide housing to students rotating in their community, though it is permissible for students to stay with friends or family near their assigned rural site. Housing accommodations will be verified by the course coordinator prior to finalizing the rural rotation. Dogs, cats and other pets cannot be accomodated at rural rotation sites.
No rural rotations will be set up in the following counties: Douglas, Johnson, Sedgwick, Shawnee or Wyandotte. Because the Department of Family & Community Medicine considers the experience of rotating at a rural site as an integral part of medical education in Kansas, rural sites within a commutable distance from Wichita are only allowed in extenuating circumstances such as birth or adoption of a new child, care for a seriously ill family member or recovery from a serious illness.
If you would like to discuss options for the rural preceptorship or you have any questions, please contact the course coordinator who can arrange a meeting with the course director.
The KU School of Medicine-Wichita Department of Family & Community Medicine offers a variety of electives to suit the interests and learning objectives of our students. If you have a special interest that doesn’t fit our current selection, please reach out to us. We are happy to discuss your interest and see where it might fit within Special Topics in Family & Community Medicine. Availability of electives are based on preceptor’s schedule.
