Why KU Wichita: Initially what led me to come to KU Wichita was the strong clinical aspects of this program. The smaller class size, combined with the large catchment area of the Wichita medical system, provides autonomy and exposure to high acuity patients with a wide variety in pathology. However, it was the people and the supportive environment that ultimately sold it for me. The program director truly takes pride in this residency program and strives to make sure everyone reaches their full potential both as a person and a physician. He leads a group of kind, hard-working people, and it is an honor to be a part of this team. Why KU Wichita: KU Wichita provides excellent training and a good work-life balance, and as a nontraditional resident with small children at home, this was a high priority for me. The private practice model of this program means we are learning to work efficiently in a fast-paced clinical environment, which allows for us to have a consistent schedule while still getting the experience we need and without sacrificing our learning.

Why KU Wichita: We love Wichita! It’s the perfect size: big enough to have almost everything I want but small enough that traffic almost never exists. I know the training I received here will prepare me for wherever my career path takes me, fellowship or private practice. Additionally, the fact that we get to work in two different hospitals with three different groups allows us to have a diverse education and allows us to understand how different groups/attendings approach their anesthetic management of complex patients. Finally, the autonomy we receive, while still having all the support we need, allows me to develop techniques that I prefer to use for each of my patients.

Anesthesiology at KU Wichita offers some unique advantages. Firstly, as a small program it provides access to relationships with attendings and coresidents you would not have elsewhere. I feel comfortable calling any of my attendings for advice and have spent time with many of them outside of the work setting. Secondly, the program is a perfect combination of private practice and academics. Our education is more important than the service needs of the hospitals - as evidenced by the ability to choose our own cases and the excellent intra-operative learning we receive. However, the two groups we work with are private practice institutions, so we learn quickly how to practice anesthesiology in the most time-efficient and logical manner. Lastly, each resident at KU Wichita is here to become excellent at clinical anesthesiology. They use the early autonomy we receive as an opportunity to become good clinicians quickly and sharpen specific skills. The environment we work in is truly fun and inspires me to challenge myself, as I know my co-residents are continually pushing themselves, too.
