Wichita Women in Health Professions (WWHP) events are intended to facilitate community networking, the formation of mentoring relationships and professional development for Wichita women in health professions. WWHP events are open to KU School of Medicine-Wichita faculty, staff, students, residents and other interested members of our community. While some WWHP events are geared toward women, we welcome anyone who is interested in our topics to attend. The Office of Faculty Affairs & Development provides funding for WWHP events and plans the events with help from the WWHP Planning Committee:

Previous Events

• September 2019 - Rooted to purpose: An evening with Robin Macy. Hosted at the Bartlett Aboretum, this WWHP event focused on provider well-being and taking a moment to find inspiration in a tranquil setting. Attendees enjoyed a meal and were inspired by Robin's story and the beautiful grounds of the Arboretum.
• January 2019 - Unconscious Gender Bias. Julie Galliart, M.S., faculty development program manager, facilitated a discussion about how unconscious bias impacts women in the workplace, which emphasized ways women can be more supportive of one another.
• August 2018 - Introduction to Mentoring. Deborah Alliston, M.D., M.Ed., residency program director and associate professor in the KUSM-W Department of Pediatrics, gave a talk about the differences between coaching and mentoring. Dr. Rachel Brown, chair and professor in the KUSM-W Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences, led a discussion about choosing a mentor and engaged in a mentoring demonstration with Dr. Sheryl Beard, senior associate program director and clinical associate professor in the KUSM-W Department of Family & Community Medicine.
• June 2018 - Chantal M. Brazeau, M.D., assistant dean for faculty vitality, interim chair of the Department of Family Medicine and professor of family medicine and psychiatry at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, discussed drivers of burnout and resilience, including work/life balance and connecting to meaning through reflection and self-awareness. This event was made possible by a generous grant from the Earl L. Mills Educational Trust.
• March 2018 - Care for the Caregiver included personal accounts from a panel of caregivers with different life experiences, including caring for a parent, spouse or child with a chronic illness. Panelists shared the challenges and joys of caregiving, and tips for self-care.
• January 2018 - Human Trafficking Awareness, a panel discussion during National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month. Panelists included Dr. Karen Countryman-Roswurm, executive director of the WSU Center for Combating Human Trafficking; Tina Peck, program coordinator of Forensic Nursing Services at Via Christi Hospitals; Nicole Ensminger, Via Christi Human Trafficking Response Program coordinator; Cathy Turner, president and CEO, Hope Ranch for Women; and Karla Armbrister, outreach manager, Wichita Family Crisis Center.
• December 2017 - Don't Sweat the Holidays, a networking mixer and donation drive for the Wichita Family Crisis Center.
• October 2017 - Strike a Pose! Power Body Language for Women, a mixer-style event exploring how body language can impact how you feel in stressful situations
• August 2017 - Trailblazers: Senior Women Clinicians of Wichita, personal accounts from early female clinicians. Panelists included Arlene Evans-DeBeverly, PA; Patricia Wyatt-Harris, MD; Laura Knight, MD; and Lucynda Raben, DDS. Facilitator - Anne Walling, MB, ChB
• June 2017 - ICT Women Helping Women, female panelists sharing how their work impacts other women in our community. Panelists included Beth Harman McGilley, PhD; Elizabeth Ablah, PhD; Dee Ann Bragg, MD; and Tracey Gay, director of client services at the Wichita Family Crisis Center.
