Women doc this!
Officially, Feb. 3 is celebrated as National Women Physicians Day, corresponding with Dr. Elizabeth Blackwell’s birthday. Blackwell was the first woman to receive a medical degree in the U.S.
We’re so proud of our women physicians here at KU School of Medicine-Wichita that we choose to celebrate them this year with a special event on our campus that includes a new photographic exhibit in our art gallery.
“An Evening Honoring Women Physicians of KUSM-W” will take place from 4-7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 2. The evening will kick off with “Women leaders in medicine,” a panel event in our Roberts Amphitheater hosted by Rachel Brown, MBBS, chair and professor, Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences.
Panelists will include Donna Sweet, M.D., professor, Internal Medicine; Sheryl Beard, M.D., volunteer clinical associate professor, Family & Community Medicine; Ashley Robbins, M.D., clinical assistant professor and clerkship director, OB-GYN; and Gretchen Irwin, M.D., associate professor, Family & Community Medicine, and associate dean for graduate medical education.
The panel discussion will be followed by a keynote address featuring Kim Templeton, M.D., KUMC professor of orthopaedic surgery and sports medicine. Support for “Wellbeing, belonging and diversity in medicine” is provided by the Department of Internal Medicine Frances Schiltz Fund.
The evening will close out with a networking reception. Attendees can view the new photographic exhibit of women physicians that will be unveiled in the William J. Reals Gallery of Art-West at KU School of Medicine-Wichita.
Refreshments will be served, so please RSVP online to help ensure everyone can be accommodated. There is no cost to attend. Please join us to pay tribute to the women physicians of KUSM-W.
