Many people experience a “low” after the excitement and activity of the holiday season. Some experience this low DUE to the holiday season. That’s why January has been designated Mental Awareness Month, as a reminder to kick off the new year by taking care of your mental health.

Mental awareness is defined by the Mental Health Center at Cedars-Sinai as “how you invest in your mental health.” It is all the actions you take to ensure your mental health needs are being met and maintained.

Setting mental health goals for yourself can be challenging, especially when many people focus on the needs of others before themselves.

Research has shown that mental health can affect physical health. You have to take care of your body in order to take care of your mind. Here are a few reminders of healthy habits that can help make that a priority:

Eat healthy.

Start with small changes if needed. A balanced diet and plenty of fresh fruits and veggies are a great start.

See your doctor.

Wellness visits and preventive screenings will keep you healthy. Seeing the doctor when sick helps you recover more quickly from illness or injury.

Sleep well.

A good night’s sleep allows your body to rest, recharge and function properly.

Manage stress.

Long-term stress takes a serious toll on your mental and physical health. Keep stress in check with some simple strategies.

Finally, don’t just dedicate January to mental wellness. Use it to kick off an entire year that is wellness focused. You deserve it!
