“Quilts & Carvings,” a new exhibit opening Nov. 3 at KU School of Medicine-Wichita, is a combined show by Karen Eaton-Hinz and Sadie Eaton.

The newest art exhibit coming to KU School of Medicine-Wichita is a family affair.

“Quilts & Carvings” will premiere in the William J. Reals Gallery of Art with an opening reception from 5-7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 3. A combined show by a grandmother and granddaughter, it will be in both the East and West galleries.

The quilts are artworks created by Karen Eaton-Hinz. A lifelong seamstress, quilter and crafter, Karen transforms digital images into textile portraits. She is retired and lives on a small farm in rural Butler County with her husband, Dave, and dog, Junee. This is her first public art exhibit.

The carvings will be created by Sadie Eaton, a Wichita native. Sadie has been an artist her entire life, featured in many art exhibits during her time at Wichita East High School. She has worked with multiple media, including painting, sculpture and printmaking. She uses a combination of digital art and traditional art, often making a digital sketch that is transferred to whatever medium she’s using, be that a painting or a print carving.

Karen and Sadie are the mother and niece of Jennifer Eaton, senior communications coordinator in Public Affairs.

“I’m extremely proud to be hosting my mom and niece for this exhibit," Jennifer Eaton said. "My entire family is full of artists. My father was a watercolor artist, both of my brothers are professional artists and musicians, my nephew is an artist and musician.

“You would think it’s in my blood, but I have no artistic ability at all. I guess my creativity only comes out in writing. I’ve resigned myself to being an art collector. But I do get some of the best gifts!”

The First Friday opening reception will include complimentary refreshments, and the public is welcome. The public entrance is the patient entrance on the east side of the building (1001 N. Minneapolis). Parking is available in the visitor parking lot or on Minneapolis Street.

The exhibit will be on display through Dec. 31. The William J. Reals Gallery of Art at KU School of Medicine-Wichita is free and open to the public.
