Interpreter services for JayDoc Community Clinic will be enhanced thanks to success of fundraising banquet
The money raised will fund 264 interpreters, including one interpreter for Monday clinics and one to two interpreters for Saturday clinics for 88 weeks.

With 73% of the patients at the JayDoc Community Clinic speaking Spanish, enough interpreters is a real need. Thanks to the support of the JayDoc Awards and Fundraising Banquet, that challenge will be met.
The JayDoc leadership had a $30,000 goal for the event, attended by about 150 people. They were overwhelmed with gratitude when they learned that through the ticket sales, sponsorships, general donations and purchases of auction items, they raised more than $44,000.
They will use this money to hire interpreters through International Translations Services LLC. The paid interpreters will supplement the volunteer staff. The money raised will fund 264 interpreters (one interpreter for Monday clinics and one to two interpreters for Saturday clinics for 88 weeks). That equals approximately 977 hours of service. JayDoc has two locations at Guadalupe Clinics, one each on south St. Francis and south Hillside streets.
Banquet attendees were able to bid on a variety of items at the silent auction, including a wine tasting party for 10 at Grace Hill Winery, 10 free classes at Orange Theory Wichita, a $100 gift card and basket from Healing Waters Spa, a Trader Joe’s goodie basket, Kendra Scott jewelry, a whiskey and cigar basket, and more with tickets to local Wichita attractions and gift cards to restaurants. The silent auction itself raised nearly $4,000.
“While furthering our fundraising goals and thanking our volunteers is a major part of this event,” said Kavya Natesan, third-year medical student and JayDoc junior executive director, “it was incredibly meaningful to celebrate JayDoc’s anniversary with an audience comprised of students and volunteers who have been the sole reason we’ve been able to sustain the clinic for two decades now. This was a unique opportunity to invite speakers such as Tessa Rohrberg, M.D., and Missy Norton, Pharm.D., who were pivotal in cultivating JayDoc’s growth and enabling us to serve our patients to the extent that we’re able to today.”
Increasing the visibility of JayDoc’s executive board members was also important to honor their dedication to the clinic. The students play crucial roles in maintaining JayDoc’s operations. All board members highlighted their responsibilities or shared details about the great work they’ve done this year.
Extending the nomination process for student awards to the entire student body was new this year. This provided the opportunity to receive nominations from the unique perspective of their peers about the great work the students do for JayDoc. This allowed even more volunteers to be recognized for their efforts.
During the past 20 years, Jaydoc has celebrated various milestones.
“In 2005, our founding board members saw a need in the community that they felt the medical school could help fill and were compelled to make it happen,” explained Nazeen Morelli, fourth-year medical student and executive director of JayDoc. “As JayDoc grew, in 2015 we seized the opportunity to bring in our colleagues from KU School of Pharmacy enabling us to work more collaboratively to care for patients. And our leadership team, which has grown to 24 board members, now includes student directors from both the schools of medicine and pharmacy.”
The capacity to see patients has grown as the number of volunteer community physicians has increased and the clinic has partnered with the KU Internal Medicine and Wesley Family Medicine residencies.
“Many JayDoc board alumni and KU Wichita alumni who volunteered with JayDoc as students now continue to volunteer with JayDoc as attendings,” said Morelli.
Executing the annual banquet is an all-hands-on-deck effort, especially for the 20th anniversary. Even on top of doing schoolwork, the students handled the process and long meetings with laughter and smiling faces.
“Seeing everything come together felt incredible,” summed up Shayla To, third-year medical student and JayDoc director of special events. “Watching in glee as the remarkable volunteers received recognition for all their hard work and dedication, hearing from the founders about their original vision for JayDoc, and seeing how much we’ve accomplished.
“It was very fulfilling to celebrate that night with classmates, mentors and community members and I can’t wait to see how much JayDoc grows in the future as we continue to care for patients!”
