About the KU School of Medicine Department of Anesthesiology education offerings:

The Department of Anesthesia at KU is committed to training the next generation of leaders in anesthesiology, critical care and pain medicine. Our specific aim of our education program at KUMC include: 

  • Preparing and educating medical students and residents to enter all types of anesthesiology programs including fellowships and clinical practice
  • Encouraging the development of leadership, promoting self-actualization and supporting personal wellness
  • Fostering continual development and advancement of anesthesia practice
  • Pursuit of experiential opportunities including scholarship activities, national policy, and global health initiatives

Medical Students 

4 week hands-on elective with lectures.

  • Anes 910 Anesthesiology
  • Anes 911 Critical Care
  • Anes 912 Special Topics in Anesthesiology


4 years categorical residency training program, 8 positions filled through the NRMP

3 years advanced anesthesiology training - entry requires prior internship training filled through the NRMP


ACGME accredited Children's Mercy/University of Kansas Pediatric Anesthesiology Fellowship 1 year

ACGME accredited Pain Management Anesthesiology Fellowship 1 year

Acute Pain and Regional Pain Medicine Fellowship 1 year
