Candidate Eligibility

Our program is approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education for four residents per year. We are a categorical program and applicants match with us starting at the PGY-1 level. We participate in the American Urological Association (AUA) Office of Education Matching Program.

  • Graduates of medical schools in the United States and Canada accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education
  • Graduates of colleges of osteopathic medicine in the United States and Canada accredited by the American Osteopathic Association
  • Graduates of medical schools outside the United States and Canada who meet one of the following qualifications:
    • A valid certificate from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates prior to appointment
    • Full and unrestricted license to practice medicine in a U.S. licensing jurisdiction in which they are training
    • International Medical Graduates with either a J1 visa, Employment Authorization Document (EAD), or permanent resident documentation (Green Card).

Please see the KU Medical Center Graduate Medical Education website for complete information as we will not interview candidates who do not meet these requirements.

Residency candidates are invited to interview with our residency program based on these criteria:

  • Performance in the basic and clinical science years as evidenced by the Medical Student Performance Evaluation (MSPE)
  • Performance on the USMLE Step 1 and Step 2
  • Three letters of reference, preferably from a urologist

  • ECFMG certification at the time of application to the residency program
  • Employment Authorization Documentation (EAD), or Green Card, or J1 visa at the time of application. For holders of H1 visas, these must be converted to J1 by the start of training.  We cannot sponsor H1 visas.
  • Foreign graduate’s medical school must be included in the “approved” schools on the KSBHA’s website KSBHA's website and not appear on the KSBHA’s list of “disapproved” schools.

How to Apply

Our AUA Residency Matching Identification Number is: 00923319. We select our applicants from the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS®). To register, visit the resident section on the AUA website. We encourage applicants to register early with both ERAS and the AUA Urology Matching Program.

Our Process

We intend to train outstanding clinical and academic urologists. Many of our graduates have moved on to complete fellowships at a variety of prestigious institutions, including Virginia Mason Medical Center, the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, MD Anderson Cancer Center, Vanderbilt University, USC, Mayo Clinic, the University of California-San Diego and Johns Hopkins.

Our residents are expected to actively participate in research projects for publication and presentation at regional and national meetings. Residents do have a dedicated three-month research block to start developing projects and learn methods. Research facilities are available for clinical or basic research. While funds for research are available through the medical center, the Department of Urology also has its own funding sources.

We have two applicant interview days each year. Applicants will be able to meet the faculty members as well as the residents. Interviewees should plan to be here by 7:30 a.m. and will be finished for the day by 3 p.m. Breakfast and lunch are provided. Applicants have the opportunity to interview with most, if not all, of our faculty members. They also have the opportunity to visit with our residents from all PGY levels. A tour of our facility and surrounding areas is also conducted. You should allow 30-45 minutes to travel to the Kansas City Airport (MCI).

Students who have rotated with us during their fourth year will not be invited for an interview and their rotation would have served as the interview. The same application process should be followed for applications, rank lists and procedures.
